Some people, including lifelong RV campers, are hesitant to bring their babies along with them on RV camping trips. There are many unknown variables, and some campers prefer to wait until the child is a bit older. While there are certainly risks involved, a little planning and preparation can go a long way. If you’re interested in bringing a baby along on your next RV camping trip, these tips from the experts at 47 West Trailer Sales can help create a safer experience.

Baby Proof Your RV

Baby proofing an RV is a lot like baby proofing a house. You’ll need to cover electrical outlets, install child locks on drawers/cabinets, and find a secure place to store potential hazardous objects. You should also tie up any loose cords and keep your curtains short. If your RV’s furniture has sharp corners, consider getting covers. Child gates are a good way to limit access to certain areas.

Make a Medical Action Plan

It can be difficult to get pediatric care on the road. Finding a pediatrician that is in the right area, is available at the right time, and is covered by your insurance are each feats unto themselves. It might be easier to simply plan your RV trip around your infant’s pediatric appointments rather than the other way around. You can also ask your pediatrician to give their opinion about how to make RV camping more comfortable for your baby. It may also be a good idea to find in-network doctors around the area you plan to visit so that you won’t end up with a huge bill if your baby suddenly gets sick.

Pack Strategically

Space is always at a premium when it comes to packing an RV. You may need to get creative in order to fit everything you need to care for your baby into your camper. Look for strollers and cribs designed to fold up when not in use. Be creative about how you store items. Limit your use of disposable items. You’d be surprised at how much space a week’s supply of disposable diapers can take up! Cloth diapers aren’t for everyone, but they’re a great tool for saving space.
