3 More Strategies For Preventing Travel Trailer Tipping

During an RV road trip, a travel trailer is at risk of tipping over. We previously covered 3 strategies to help prevent this unsafe situation, but here are 3 more helpful tips to utilize on your next drive!

Avoid Sudden Stops

One cause of a travel trailer tipping over is when the driver doesn't slow down far enough in advance and comes suddenly to a stop.

This can often happen with new RV owners underestimating how long it takes to bring the tow vehicle and the travel trailer to a full stop. That's why it's helpful to practice braking in a low-traffic neighborhood or an empty parking lot. Drive at different speeds, then see how much distance and time you'll need before everything comes to a full stop.

When you're on a road trip, be sure to stay focused. For example, continually scan the road for upcoming hazards so you can plan to avoid them without needing to hit the brakes suddenly.

Monitor Road Conditions

Poor road conditions can also contribute to a travel trailer tipping over. A common one is patches of ice scattered across the road's surface.

If possible, avoid driving during bad weather or right after bad weather. If that's not an option, proceed with caution. Drive at a lower speed than usual. This will help you better spot and deal with any road hazards...as well as any motorists on the road not taking the precautions that they should!

Watch Out for Excessive Wind

Winds can reach impressive speeds - enough to knock over a heavy travel trailer.

When the winds get severe enough, you should find somewhere to safely pull over and wait it out.

If the winds aren't too severe, but still powerful, exercise caution whenever you pass a truck. That's because you can get hit with an extra gust of wind, which could cause the travel trailer to tip over.
